split grade...

Ok so my first image on the last post wasnt working properly. I couldnt fix the writing and it you cant read a few of the words so this is what it says!!

This is my first test strip.
I tested this on F8 Filter 0 and strips of 5-25 seconds.

The reason  did this was to get the correct exposure time for the highlighted area's in the image.

My split grade printing practice in the darkroom.

This is my first test strip.
I tested this on F8 Filter 0 and strips of 5-25 seconds.

The reason  did this was to get the correct exposure   time for the highlighted area's in the image.
I decided I wanted the highlights to be exposed for 15 seconds on filter 0.

This was to find out what time Iwanted the darker area's of the image to be. I knew Iwanted the highlights to be exposed for 15 seconds so firstly Iexposed it on filter 0 for that amount of time.

The next step was to figure out what amount of time the darker area's needed so Idid test strips of 10-40 seconds on filter 5.

This image was exposed for 15 seconds on filter 0 to bring out the highlights and 10-40 seconds test strips on filter 5 to determine the exposure time for the darker area's.

Ok so I thought that 15 seconds for the darker area's was a
good exposure time so I exposed for 15 seconds on filter 5  for that and 15 seconds on filter 0 for the highlighted area's.

Here you can see that the highlights are quite bright and the darker area's are nice and dark and the greys are in there too.

This gives a good even tone of contrast.

Split Grade Printing Part 2

This is the second part to the split grade demonstration. I think he shows a good example of split grading and he explains it very clearly.

split grade printing part 1.

Yesterday in the darkroom we were practicing split grade printing. I done some research on it and I found this great demonstration on YouTube.
There are 2 parts to the demonstration and this is part 1.

My own take on the book and ring shot!

Well here is my mimic shot. As I said in the previous blog I wanted to find a shot that I could set up and do in my house.
For this shot I set up a black background and the only lighting I used was a lamp.
I tested the shot with the digital camera a couple of times using different techniques and then I shot it with the analog camera.

This shot was taken on the camera on ISO 400, F 4.5 and 1/6 seconds on a tripod.

In the darkroom, on the enlarger the shot was processed on F 8, filter 4 for 76 seconds.

The image was also burned in for 15 seconds on the highlighted area's on filter 1.

I feel that this shot turned out well. I got the effects that I was looking for and I enjoyed setting it up in my house.

Mimic Shot..

Photo taken by Claua Morim and uploaded onto Flickr

I was looking for images to copy at home, .i.e. their lighting set up, subject matter and meaning.
While I was researching I came across this shot.
It's a typical shot used manly by wedding photographers but it was simple for me to set up and practise at home.

I'm going to enlarger the negative of my version of the shot tomorrow night in college and I will upload my own image then.

More of the babies!

Here is more pictures of Sean and Caoimhe. The blog would only let me put up 3 images at a time but I wanted to put up more because I like them. I love the kids eyes in these photo's.

The cutest babies ever!!

These little cuties are my cousins Sean and Caoimhe. My auntie asked me to take some shots of the kids so i went up, brought the digital and the flash and just fired away using the techniques I've learned so far.
I really like how the pictures turned out and i changed the colour to black and white and sepia using Picasa.

Photograms

These are images I made in the darkroom called Photograms. A Photogram is an image made without a camera or lense. To make these images I placed the objects onto photo sensitive paper and exposed it to light using the enlarger.

The lecturers keep telling us to explain our emotions when we take the photos.

 This is a positive image.

Why the word fuck??  I was thinking what the fuck have I gotten myself into.

For those of you who dont know, I`m obsessed with my tweezers. I cant go anywhere without it. Im like a baby with a soother, it calms me down.

This is the negitive of the image above.

This is a negitive Photogram. I made the eye out of Playdough.

Darkroom Images

These 2 images are Prints I'm currently working on in the darkroom.
I wasn't to sure about photographing horses but after seeing my contact sheet i quite like them!
The top image in particular i like, as i think the expression on the horse is Hilarious.
I'm thinking of using these prints for 2 of my final 4 images for exercise 2.

As you guys can tell I have more work to do on them, the negs are a tad dirty and I'll need to burn in some of the sky that's missing.
I am really liking the darkroom at the minute and I'm getting the hang of all the techniques,
it's quite relaxing and I go at my own speed.
I'm really into using contrasty images and I'm using alot of filter 4 and 5.
The above images were both filter 4.
The first shot was taken at F8 and 28 seconds and The second one was F8 and 32 seconds

I have more darkroom images so I'll post them up soon and when I have done The actual final prints of the 2 above I'll put them up too

Halloween 31st of October 2011 cont.

This is another shot from Halloween night.
The theme was the old west,
so i decided to change the picture to sepia as i feel it gives it a much more authentic feel.
I`ll blog again with more pictures soon x.

halloween shots 31st of october 2011

This is my first shot from my fancy dress shoot on Halloween night.
my friends pestered me to take pictures of them all dressed up.
So on Halloween night the girls got dressed up, and with the help of a cleverly positioned white bed sheet
a nice big Bower flash and tripod i set to work taking the pictures.
I didnt have much work to do on photoshop with these images as the girls looked great by themselves.
I didnt need to give them much direction either because they are "posers" and extreamly photogenic (they told me to say that).
I`m still working on the other photographs and i will put them up as soon as i get a chance.

Me, Myself and I

Hi everyone my name is karla, I'm 24 and i really hate writing about myself....  but here it goes...

I find it really hard to talk about myself so please be patient with me ok, I'm trying to get used to it.

So...
I live in Kildare, and I work in childcare, specifically playschool children and then afterschool kids.

Anyway enough of the boring stuff!

I have decided to do a course in Photographic Media as i have had a huge interest in taking photo's and what actually goes into making the 'perfect' photo.
Like the techniques used and the the camera controls etc etc.
I found a diploma course in photography online and I was able to take it part-time, which was great because i still need to work ( pay the bills and all!)
The course is in Griffith College Dublin and will lead into (if i choose) second year of a BA in photography.

The course its self is pretty intense with me phisically being in college 4 nights a week and all my weekends taken up with either shooting roles or developing in the darkroom,
anyway what i really mean is that for the next 8 months i have no life!
other then eat, sleep and drink photographs, images and anything to do with a camera!
I dont have an awful lot of experience in photography but I am hoping to maybe make a career change and work in the field in the future ( fingers crossed... double crossed !)

The first week came with a bit of a shock though, as i have only used digital cameras, and i was told that we would only be using analog cameras for the first semester.
Thats 12 weeks without using aperture priority and automatic settings (scarier than you think)

Over the weekend i shot my first roll of black and white film,
the film I used was Ilford  HP5 400 ISO.

This was the first time i have ever had to be aware of Apature, Shutter Speed and ISO and i really enjoyed shooting.

Ill be processing this film tomorow in the dark room and im really excited to see the outcome. If the images are good ill post them if they are rubbish ill keep them to myself!!!
Joking I'll post them no moatter the outcome, mistakes and all

Got to go. have to go to my next class. talk to you soon!!
